Designer Cruisin'

There's a new stitcher entering the fashion arena. It should be no surprise that Katie Holmes wants a piece of the fashion pie. Our first clue may have been her sudden friendship with fashion icon Victoria Beckham. I mean, you can't be friends with VB and not be in the know fashionably speaking. The other clues dropped were when Katie first collaborated with her stylist to design a gown for the premiere of Tom's Tropic Thunder. She apparently liked it so much she did it again and created a satin jumpsuit for her own debut on Broadway. Finally, a rep for Katie has confirmed that Mrs. Cruise is indeed moonlighting as a designer with the help of her stylist. Word is, her line will be available in the fall and sold exclusively at Maxfield in L.A. The collection will include women's and children's clothes. Hmmm... looking forward to this creation.

Mr. Ford Goes Hollywood!

There is one very sexy man in fashion. No, he's not the only one but, he's definitely on my radar. I'm talking about none other than Tom Ford of Gucci and YSL fame. There's just something about him and his sensibility, fashion-wise. Whether it's a suit or his next business venture, the man really knows how to work it! He's making a bit of a career move that may be a little unexpected to some. He's making a move into film writing and directing. His first film is going to be an adaptation of a novel by Christoper Isherwood called A Single Man. This isn't just some fluff or an all out action flick either. The story is a period piece from the 60's about how a professor deals with the death of his significant other. Pretty heavy stuff for the first time out of the gate. The film is premiering at the Venice Film Festival and will close out the festival on September 11th. Good luck with that, Mr. Ford!

Fashion and music have always been bed buddies so it should come as no surprise that fashion's top designers are having a love affair with the radio. Isaac Mizrahi, who seems determined to conquer every medium, launched a radio show recently. His show is called Isaac Mizrahi: Tell Me Everything and it airs on Martha Stewart Living Radio. On his show he takes calls on fashion and style advice. Kinda like the Sketches and Answers bit he did on his Style Network show years ago. This time though, he won't always answer the questions solo. He'll also have stylist, designers and models chime in. The kids on the radio block are Dean and Dan Caten, the brothers duo behind Dsquared2. Their show will be broadcast on Sirius radio starting May 5th. This one is a little different. They'll play all of their favorite music, including stuff from their runway soundtracks. That's a nice twist. They'll also have interviews with celebs and discuss fashion and life in general.

Gwyneth's Style

Are there enough celebrities in the fashion world? Gwyneth Paltrow doesn't seem to think so. The actress has just designed her own collection for Fall/Winter '09. She's partnered with French label ZOEtee's to create ZOEtee's Loves Gwyneth. The line reportedly consists of jersey basics with some glam 70's looks. Pieces are also said to have some masculine touches in the tailoring. Should be interesting. The collection was unveiled recently in second home, London. Seems the star is designing with a purpose, proceeds from every item sold will be donated to the London's Kids Company. Gwyneth is all over the place lately when it comes to her entrepreneurial ventures. She's created the website GOOP, there's talk of she and her trainer opening up a gym and now she's in the fashion world. Let's not forget she's an actress. She's gearing up to film a movie right now as well.

Alexander the Great!

Some interesting designs made their way down the runway in an Alexander McQueen show recently. I found these images and had to share. I like the dress in the first pic. The metal get-up under it... that scares me.... a lot! The dress in the second pic is really pretty and serene but the models enhanced red lips are a bit of a distraction. He used something like wax lips on the models to give them an EXTRA pout. Then there's the birdcage on the head of the last model. INCREDIBLE!


The last few pics are a little more sane. This was quite a show and the clothes are phenomenal!!!!!!!!!!!

Not only is she the number one tennis player in the world, Serena Williams is diving into fashion! She and Venus have made no secret of their love of fashion and design. While Venus started her clothing line a few years back, Serena is just getting her designs off the ground. Recently, she attended a launch event for her new Signature Statement fashion and accessories line. The new collection will be sold on the Home Shopping Network starting April 30.

Isaac Mizrahi has been called the king of real-world chic. Taking that title and running with it, he's written a book. The title, How to Have Style, is fitting. As a twenty-year veteran of the fashion industry, he shares his style rules on everything from boots to bags and skirt length to the right undergarments. Mizrahi puts his approach to looking great on full display. There's a fashionista in every woman and Isaac seems intent on helping you find it. Rule #1 for Isaac - all women should wear what inspires them. I can get behind that 100%.

Reese's Pieces

I just had to show off some pieces from the most recent collection of Tracy Reese. She's been a favorite designer of mine for a while for her dresses. They are so pretty and remind you that you're a girl. I may be a little biased because we share a hometown, just maybe. The inspiration for this collection is post-impressionist portraiture. She drew from artists like Vuillard, Van Gogh and Modigliani and their use of color. This season was a tough one for the designer who recently lost her mother. She dedicated her New York show to mom.

Hats off...

Good ole Isaac Mizrahi had some interesting pieces on display for New York's fashion week. The most interesting had to be these hats! Yes, those things are supposed to be on the models heads. Is it crazy creative or just crazy? You be the judge. That being said, I have had a thing for Isaac Mizrahi since his show on Oxygen, since his days of frequenting the Oprah show, since well, forever. How could you not love Isaac? Anybody that can bring fashionable and affordable together and single-handedly make Target – Tar-zhay is worthy of such adulation, right? Anywho, Mr. Mizrahi is teaming up with the peeps at Liz Claiborne to collaborate on a new line. Could this be a match made in fashion heaven? Liz Claiborne founded her line for the everyday woman and Isaac has been making more affordable fashions for a while now. It's about time they teamed up, huh? Considering the economic, uh, issues… the timing is perfect! Check out his more, ahem, tame designs here and here.

Mmmm Bye

Who knew?! Mandy Moore had one of the most low key clothing lines in existence. I say had because it's over. I knew about Mblem but I'm not sure many more people did. Moore started her with a line of t-shirts and moved on from there. After almost three years, the singer/actress/designer is shutting down operations for her clothing line. It's easy to want to blame the economy for this one but Moore has a different story. She tells WWD, "If I were to dip my toe back in there, it would have to be the right situation… a great partnership that could represent a true reflection of me and my ideas and you know that wasn't happening. So next go round, that needs to be top of the list." For now, she's getting back to her roots in music. She'll be releasing a new album this May.

Recession-ista Times

If you can believe it, something good may actually come from this recession. All may not be lost for the fashionista. Bestsey Johnson is reportedly going to join forces with a retailer for a limited-time only line that will launch in the fall. The only budget-friendly stores to drop limited-time only lines from top designers are Target and H&M. I don't know about you but, this is sounding very H&M-esque to me. I'm already loving it!

Sienna Style

Sienna Miller didn't spend last weekend at the Oscars. While other stars were hitting the stage to accept awards, she was hitting the runway and taking a bow. The actress and her older sister, Savannah, were in London debuting their line Twenty8Twelve (named for Sienna's birthday December 28) at London Fashion Week. The two-year old line debuted their Fall collection to a packed house that included fashions newest musician-turn-designer Kanye West. The clothes boast a hobo flair but still has finely-tailored details. Savannah tells Style.com the collection is “Pirates of the road meets Grace Jones.” Even with the success of her clothing line, Sienna is in no rush to quit her day job. "I love acting", she says. "But I also love working with my sister. We’ve always been two sisters playing dress-up, ever since we were kids and we’re still doing it.”

Justin Timberlake just keeps making waves in the fashion world. We're used to Justin Timberlake covering magazines while promoting his music and movies. GQ has given him a different honor. As he continues to make waves in the fashion world, the go to mag for stylish men has name him one of their most stylish men of 2009! This is shaping up to be a good year for Timberlake, fashionably speaking. His William Rast line made its New York Fashion Week debut this month and now he's covering GQ. And it's on February! Others on the GQ list include Kanye West, T.I. and Jason Schwartzman.

How do you go from cute kid stars to bonafide fashion icons? Ask Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The sisters have a unique fashion sense that they've parlayed into to fashion lines. It was always a mystery to me how these two got involved in fashion. Well according to an interview with Mary-Kate her love for fashion didn't come from reading fashion magazines, it started by looking at people. "When you're walking down the street, or you're at a restaurant, someone catches your eye because they have their own look. It goes way beyond what they're wearing-into their mannerisms, the way they smile, or just the way they hold themselves", she says. As for their lines The Row and Elizabeth and James, they flow through the design process together. Mary-Kate says, "An idea will come, whether it's from a movie or a person or a character or a place . . . Then we go through color, silhouettes, and fabric.
